New Delhi
The projects include flyovers, underpasses, streetlighting, landscaping & upgradation of roads Many of the PWD projects are running behind schedule thus necessitating Minister’s visit NEW DELHI: Delhi PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan would from Monday be personally visiting all 22 construction sites being handled by the Public Works Department for the Commonwealth Games-2010 to ensure that there are no delays in any of these projects. “Over the next 10 to 12 days I would be going to all these 22 project sites and supervising them personally. Usually there are delays on account of shifting of services or such matters and I would be working towards ensuring that all the rough spots are ironed out,” Mr Chauhan said on Saturday. The Minister said these 22 projects relate to different aspects like installation of new streetlights on 450 km of roads: “At night I would be visiting the sites where these lights have been installed to see their efficacy. Similarly the PWD is also engaged in beautification and landscaping at a number of places”. The department would be landscaping 150 km of roads by June 2010. But the most important aspect of PWD’s work remains the construction of various flyovers and underpasses. At present the PWD is constructing a bridge at Neela Hauz, ITO Chungi slip road and underpass, flyovers at R.R. Kohli Marg, Shastri Nagar Pusta, BJ Marg/RTR Marg, Nelson Mandela/Vivekanand Marg and Aruna Asaf Ali Marg/Africa Avenue. The department is also constructing flyovers at Nangloi National Highway-10, Shyam Lal College Grand Trunk Road, Apsara Border, U.P. Link Road and a rail over-bridge on Road No. 68. Among the projects near the Commonwealth Games Village that the department is handling are a flyover on the National Highway-24 by-pass near Ghazipur and alignment over Barapullah Drain that would provide a fast access from Ring Road to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Besides, the PWD is working on corridor improvement of Road No. 56, Ring Road by-pass from Salimgarh Fort to Velodrome Road, road under-bridge on Road No. 58-64, and flyovers at Naraina, Azadpur and Behra Enclave. It is also undertaking improvement of the Masoodpur corridor and the Mahipalpur tunnel project. For the Commonwealth Games, the PWD has also been mandated to strengthen and resurface 917 km of roads with recycling and new technologies. The Minister said the department is also engaged in construction, beautification and landscaping of approach roads to three of the stadiums – Thyagaraja Stadium, Ludlow Castle Stadium and Chhatrasal Stadium. Noting that the Delhi Government wants to ensure that all the PWD projects related to the Commonwealth Games are completed as per schedule, the Minister said that after the Delhi Assembly elections he had paid a visit to various sites. But since considerable time had passed since then and the Lok Sabha elections and the Assembly session had come in between, it was now time to once again visit all the sites and see to it that the deadlines set for the Commonwealth Games preparations are met. What appears to have also necessitated the visit is the fact that many of the PWD projects -- like the ITO Chungi underpass, flyovers on Outer Ring Road in South Delhi as also those at Azadpur and Behra Enclave -- are running way behind schedule and the Delhi Government wants to ensure that there are no more delays in the ongoing projects.
