JK Tyre karting: exciting battle on the cards

Coimbatore: It is going to be a pitched battle between Mumbai’s Ameya Walavalkar and Chennai’s Vishnu Prasad in the senior segment when the two meet for the second time this season in the fifth JK Tyre Indian National Rotax Max karting championship which begins at the Kari Motor Speedway in Chettipalayam, near here, this weekend.

After an exciting opening round, seasoned campaigner Ameya of Team Mohite Racing managed to take the lead with 88 points.

The young Vishnu from Team Meco is not far behind at 86 followed by Mumbai’s Gurikk Mann at 79.

Team Meco’s Raj Bharath from Bangalore is in a similar position as Ameya in the junior class. Chennai’s Vikash Anand (Team Indus Karts) and Bangalore’s Nikhil Kashyap (Team Amaron Pro Racing with Meco), with 82 and 80 points, are in the next two positions respectively.

Eleven-year-old Tarun from Chennai of Team Meco, with 89 points, heads the championship table in the micro max category followed by Chennai’s Surya Raghuram (Team Meco) and Kolhapur’s Dhruv Mohite (Team Mohite Racing).

The championship, which has witnessed a record number of entries, features three categories – micro max (8-12yrs), juniors (13-16) and seniors (16 & above) and support race of four-stroke engines.

The qualifying races and the heats will be held on Saturday followed by the main races on Sunday. The winner of the senior and junior classes will represent India in the Rotax Max World final in Egypt later this year.

Second round today

The second round of the fourth edition of the Rolon FMSCI National racing championship begins at the Kari Motor Speedway in Chettipalayam, near here, on Saturday. Team Red Rooster opened its campaign on a splendid note with three of its international riders coming up with a stupendous show.

At the end of the first round, K. Rajini, with 10 points, is marginally ahead of Rohit V. Giri (8pts) and Preetham Dev Moses (6 pts) in Group ‘A’ FIM 600cc super bike (four-stroke) class. P. Karthick of Team TVS Racing is in a similar position in the expert category (Group ‘B’ four-stroke 130-165cc).

He is closely followed by veteran racer Sriskandarajah (8 pts) of Team Sidvin and T.K. Vishwanath (6 pts) of Team TVS.

The qualifying races will be held on Saturday followed by the main races the next day.

A few of the opening round races, which were curtailed due to rain, will also be held this weekend.

Two in lead

Ramnath Bhuvanesh and P. Maheswaran emerged as joint leaders with 5.5 points apiece after the sixth round of the State FIDE-rated chess championship at Karaikudi on Friday.

Important results (round six): Shyam Nikil 5 lost to Ramnath Bhuvanesh 5.5; Ram S. Krishnan 4.5 lost to P. Maheswaran 5.5; Lakshmi Narayanan 5 bt Naveen Kanna 4; R. Balasubramaniam 5 bt Alaguraja 4; J. Arun 4 lost to T. Abhay 5.

K. Narayanan 4.5 drew with Venkat Sundaram 4.5; Ganesh Babu 4.5 drew with Pradeep Kumar 4.5; Haribalu 5 bt Gopalakrishnan 4; D.P. Singh 4.5 bt Lokesh 3.5; S.A. Kannan 3.5 lost to Vinoth Kumar 4.5.

Chess tournament

Modern senior secondary school will organise the second International rating chess tournament from August 4 to 8 at the school premises, AG’s Office Colony, Nanganallur.

AICF registration fee is Rs.250 and for Tamil Nadu players TNSCA registration is Rs.70.

Entries close on July 31.
