CHENNAI: Centuries by M.R. Shrinivas and G. Vignesh, an unbeaten half-century on debut by schoolboy cricketer B. Indrajith, and a six-wicket haul from V. Arun Kumar were the highlights of the first day of this season’s TNCA first-division cricket league. Shrinivas, batting at three, compiled an unbeaten 146 (263b, 17x4) to help India Pistons finish on 299 for five in 90 overs after being asked to bat by Young Stars. During the course of his stay, Shrinivas added 96 for the fifth wicket with I.T. Thabaarak Baik (36) and 82 for the third wicket with R. Srinivasan. Vignesh, one of several cricketers re-entering the mainstream after stints in the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League (ICL), struck 115 in 139 balls with 15 fours and a six, as Jolly Rovers made 374 for nine in 90 overs against Grand Slam. The opening pair of Vignesh and M. Vijay (45) put on 91 in just 15.3 overs. Captain R. Sathish made 51 (63b, 7x4, 1x6) and S. Vidyut ended the day unbeaten on 91 (120b, 12x4). For Grand Slam, left-arm spinner Arun Kumar returned figures of six for 95. Indrajith impressesIndrajith, a 15-year-old class-ten student at St. Bede’s, was undefeated on 60 (190b, 6x4), as Indian Bank, playing Globe Trotters, ended the day on 194 for five in 90 overs. Indrajith, playing his first first-division match, was involved in a partnership of 67 with Mohammad Asif. At Murugappa, Parry’s closed on 223 for five in 90 overs after having slid to 144 for five at one stage against IOB. Captain N. Raghavendran (54 batting, 95b, 8x4, 1x6) put on an unbroken 79 with Arjun Sarathy to rescue his side. Earlier, Vikram Mani made 62 (155b, 7x4), raising an 83-run first-wicket stand with M. Hari Krishna (34). Off-spinner J. Joel Joseph took four wickets for IOB. Vijay assumed command of its match against UFCC (T. Nagar), finishing on 137 for one after dismissing its opponent for 190. Vijay’s seamers P. Amarnath and J. Kaushik shared six wickets. UFCC wicketkeeper-batsman M. Kamalesh made a fighting 54 not out (113b, 8x4), adding 63 for the seventh wicket with L. Vignesh (36) after his side had slumped to 52 for six. Kamalesh was also involved in the one wicket UFCC took, but K.B. Arun Karthick (60 batting, 71b, 6x4, 1x6) and captain R. Prasanna (57 batting, 95b, 8x4) put on 135 to give Vijay control. P. Shijit Chandran (88, 154b, 10x4) and M.P. Rajesh (58 batting, 100b, 6x4, 1x6) helped Aruna score 286 for four in 90 overs against Southern Railway.
