BRESSANONE (Italy): Ankit Sharma finished a creditable fifth in the boys’ long jump event of the 6th IAAF World Youth championships here on Thursday. The Indian reached 7.47 metres in the third round. He did not cross seven metres in any of the other attempts, the next best being 6.92m in the final round. He also had two fouls. Thai S.N.A. Supanara won the title with a personal best 7.65 metres and was followed by South African Stefan Brits (7.57m) and German Yannick Roggatz (7.53m). On Wednesday, Ankit qualified for the final with a jump of 7.42 metres. Indian discus throwers Prabhjot Singh (59.59m) and Kirpal Singh Batth (57.51) did well in the final, finishing fifth and ninth respectively. Syrian Hamid Manssour (64.20m), American Ryan Crouser (61.64m) and Jamaican Traves Smikle (61.22m) won the medals. India had disappointment in the girls’ 400-metre heats as Aswathi Mohanan (58.38s), a trainee of P.T. Usha, and Charivila Arya (57.97) were eliminated in the first round. Aswathi finished seventh and last in her heat, while Arya was sixth in a seven-girl field with one runner disqualified.
