Deepan in lead

NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Deepan Chakkravarthy outwitted second seeded Kazakh GM Murtas Kazhgaleyev to emerge as the leader with 4.5 points after five rounds of Paris International chess tournament in Paris on Wednesday.

Deepan, rated 133 rating points below Kazhgaleyev’s 2639, won with black pieces to move half a point ahead of compatriots Sriram Jha, Mary Ann Gomes, Luxembourg’s Alberto David and Spain’s Daniel Alsina.

Mary, returning to competitive chess after a long break, upstaged teammate and 12th seed S. P. Sethuraman.

Kidambi loses

India’s latest GM S. Kidambi (3.5 points) suffered his first loss in the 32nd Barbera del Valles International Open after facing Cuba’s Alonso Yusnel Bacallao in the fifth round at Barbera del Valles in Spain.

On the brighter side, Aniruddha Deshpande surprised 11th seed Dominik Orzech of Poland. Three players lead with 4.5 points each.

Tania opens account

Top seed Tania Sachdev opened her account in the Donostia Chess Festival in San Sebastian, Spain, by drawing the second round with Germany’s Marta Michna.

Russians Irina Zakurdjaeva and Yana Melnikova share the lead with two points in the 10-player round-robin ladies event.
