Colombo: no plan to set up military base on island

NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka has denied any plans to build a military base on the Katchatheevu island, ceded by India as per an agreement in 1974, Minister of External Affairs S. M. Krishna told D. Raja of the (CPI), during the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
The issue was raised during the visit by a delegation last month led by Senior Adviser to the Sri Lankan President, Basil Rajapaksa.
The delegation included Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga. The delegation again clarified that it did not contemplate putting up military structures on the Katchatheevu, added Mr. Krishna.
