Nagercoil: It was a memorable day for a school teacher belonging to a remote village who got a computer to educate poor children, thanks to efforts made by the Kanyakumari district unit of Indian Red Cross Society here on Thursday. According to Collector Rajendra Ratnoo, president of the Society, the district administration and the Society had identified 53 schools to provide computer knowledge to the wards of poor people in different parts of the district. The programme has been implemented 40 communities and 53 government schools in Kanyakumari district including three taluks including Agastheeswaram, Kalkulam and Vilavancode. The communities were chosen based on existing needs and the lack of NGO presence and capacity of the Indian Red Cross district Unit. The Collector said that the capacity building activities for the volunteers were conducted before the implementation of the activities. The volunteers were the pillars of the integrated programme. The Red Cross unit has been implementing various development welfare activities for the poor like providing a sum of Rs.53 lakh for the purchase of computer and library books, Rs.7,42,000 for recreational activities, Rs. 1.5 lakh for providing first aid, and Rs.6 lakh for health and hygiene schemes. Mr. Ratnoo appreciated the efforts taken by the office-bearers of the Red Cross in the development activities for the betterment of the society.
