Thousands take part in Azhither festival

Crowd puller: Devotees pull the Thyagarajar Swamy Temple car at the ‘Azhither’ festival in Tiruvarur on Thursday.

TIRUVARUR: Car festival of Sri Thyagarajaswamy Temple was held here on Thursday. Thousands of people pulled, one of the biggest cars in the State weighing 300 tonnes along the Raja Veedhis. Devotees chanted loud “Aroora,” “Thyagesa” as they pulled the car.

The gigantic, beautifully decorated temple car moved gently on the East Main Street, then North Main Street and entered the West Main Street by noon. The car is called “Azhither” meaning big like a deep ocean. It is fitted with iron wheels and operates on hydraulic brake system designed and executed by the Bharath Heavy Electricals Limited in Tiruchi.

U. Mathivanan, Dairy Development Minister, M. Chandrasekaran, District Collector, Ram. V. Thiagarajan, Trustee, Praveen Kumar Abhinabu, Superintendent of Police, Kavitha, Joint Commissioner, HR and CE and others participated in the festival. They also joined the devotees to pull the car.
