Tuticorin: The World Consumer Day was observed here at St. Mary’s College to create awareness in the minds of consumers about product quality and how the consumers should be content with the purchase of products.

The programme was organised by the Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection in association with Empower, Centre for Consumer Education, Advocacy and Research Centre.

“Every consumer has the right to approach the court and sue a manufacturer for the inferior quality of the product if they encounter any deception. There is no necessity for a lawyer to represent the grievances of the consumers or even argue over the issue of a fraudulent activity in promoting the sale of a product or commodities. The aggrieved consumers themselves can argue for any shortcomings,” Mr. Durai Ravichandran, District Revenue Officer, said while presiding over the programme.

Ms. V.V. Lakshmi, Assistant Commissioner, Salt Department, in her address, the emphasis was laid on finding ways to uphold consumer rights to ensure safety and privileges of every consumer.

“Every consumer has the right to demand for the exchange of products when the quality goes below par,” she added. Referring to production of salt in Tuticorin, she said as many as 12 lakh tonnes were being produced every year. She stressed the need for consumption of iodised salt for maintaining a disease free life. Later, students were given a demonstration using a salt testing kit. Mr. A. Shankar, Executive Director, Empower and District Coordinator of Citizen Consumer Club, while delivering the keynote address, said the club was active in as many 30 schools and colleges. As many as 150 students from 20 educational institutions participated in the programme.
