Tuticorin: As the ongoing strike by medicos has entered the ninth consecutive day on Thursday, 80 house surgeons gathered in front of Collectorate here on Thursday and staged a demonstration demanding that their stipend be raised.
The agitators said that a marginal hike from Rs. 4,500 to Rs. 6,000 per month did not suit their requirements. After holding talks with the authorities concerned on the increase in stipend, they were not impressed with the outcome.
“Hence, we decided to go on an indefinite strike,” one of the demonstrators said.
They sought the intervention of the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister for holding further talks over the ongoing issue for an amicable settlement.
Earlier, they staged a series of demonstrations, a one-day token strike, hunger strike, formation of human chain, rally and wearing of black badges.
They also carried placards saying “Tamil Nadu is the best of all states in India in terms of catering medical services to the needs of patients in a timely manner and on the contrary, we as house surgeons are being paid the least amount of stipend”. They also raised slogans.
S. Vijayakumar, President, Tamil Nadu Non Service Post Graduate Students, Dental Students and Compulsory Residential Rotational Internship Association, led the demonstration.
