NEW BEGINNING: Plus One students being received with panchavadyam at the pravesanolsavam organised to mark the opening of Plus One courses at the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School in the city on Thursday. KOCHI: Thousands of young students joined Plus One classes in various higher secondary schools across Ernakulam district on Thursday. As per records available with the Office of the Regional Deputy Director of Higher Secondary Education here, the total number of Plus One seats available in the district is 19,430. Kurian Joseph, Kerala High Court Judge, inaugurated the ‘pravesanolsavam’ held at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School here in the morning. He urged the students to work towards nation building by performing their duties as responsible citizens. Mr. Joseph said the student community should try to acquire values that would help them achieve success in life. C. K. Manisankar, Deputy Mayor, presided over the meeting. S. S. Anilkumar, Regional Deputy Director of Higher Secondary Education, Corporation councillors K. V. P. Krishnakumar and David Parambithara spoke. Bineesh K. Shaji of Kothamangalam St. George HSS, who won the silver medal in the World School Athletic Championship, and Raju Paul, his coach, and faculty of the school were felicitated on the occasion. Mr. Manisankar handed over a purse of Rs. 5,555 to Bineesh. Mr. Paul received Rs. 1,000 from Mr. Anilkumar. Hundreds of students who gathered at the school broke into a thunderous applause when Bineesh was felicitated at the function. The Regional Deputy Director said that students could apply for school transfer on July 10 and 13. The vacancy position in each school would be available on the Higher Secondary Directorate’s official website. Applications for school transfer should be submitted to the principal of the school in which the candidate has joined. The processing of applications for school transfer will be held after July 13. Mr. Anilkumar said that applications from students, who have failed to get admission till now, would be considered after the completion of the process of school transfer. Students who have cleared the ‘Save a Year Examination’ can also apply during this period. Only eight seats were vacant in the seats under the general merit category for Plus One programmes in the district as on Thursday.
