KOCHI: The department of History at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit is making an attempt to initiate academic programmes on new social movements, especially on gender, ecology and Dalit issues. The new postgraduate programme on gender, ecology and Dalit studies being offered under the innovative programmes of the University Grants Commission is part of this effort. Knowledge baseS. Sivadasan, head of the department, said that the course proposes to generate knowledge about new social movements. “It will theoretically posit these issues as well as create a knowledge base locally from the grassroots by establishing a link with ongoing movements,” he said. Teaching methods will involve less of lectures and will be oriented more towards fieldwork and expanding the space for local history, an emerging area of concern with the discipline of history. It is also expected to throw up a wide area for research in this field, Prof. Sivadasan said. More details about the course can be had from Department of History, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Ernakulam district. Phone: 0484-2463380 (extension - 200), 2466175.
