Research scholars protest against NET order

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A number of research scholars under the aegis of the All-India Researchers’ Coordination Committee organised a protest march in the Capital on Thursday over the University Grants Commission’s recent notification regarding withdrawal of the National Eligibility Test (NET) exemption for M. Phil degree holders.

The protesters claimed that the notification would “ruin the future” of a number of research scholars from various universities all over the country.

“This will also hamper the growth and quality of research which is highly useful for national development, Moreover, UGC has been continuously reversing its own decision regarding NET exemption again and again which is a violation of natural justice,” said the committee in a statement.

The committee has demanded restoration of the NET exemption to M. Phil degree holders, at least up to academic year 2009, to become eligible for lecturership in colleges and universities.
