Plea to shelve project

Staff Reporter

Kochi: The Aluva-based Association for Environmental Protection and Kerala Nadi Samrakshana Samithi (State River Protection Council) have asked the government not to revive the much-debated Pooyamkutty hydro electric project.

“Pooyamkutty, a tributary of the Periyar river, contributes about 11,000 tmc (thousand million cubic metres) of water to it. If the project comes into force, that will ring the death knell of the fast-thinning Periyar. Besides, the project will not augur well for the bio-diverse region in the Nilgiri biosphere. This will also lead to large-scale displacement of Adivasis who have been living in that area for long,” S. Sitaraman, secretary of Association for Environmental Protection, said.

In a separate media communiqué, the association demanded probe into the mass fish death in the Periyar and alleged that this would have occurred due to the dumping of industrial waste.
