KOCHI: In a fitting tribute to the king of pop Michael Jackson, musicians and others from across the State and even outside will come together in Kochi and perform at the Durbar Hall Ground on August 29 evening, his birthday.

Titled ‘MJ Night’, the event will be led by pop singer Usha Uthup. “We are very proud to host the event, since we need to join hands and say ‘thank you’ to the consummate performer who inspired so many musicians across the world,” she said, while addressing mediapersons at the Ernakulam Press Club on Thursday. The musical evening has been organised by the Dancers and Choreographers’ Association in Kerala (DACA) and the D-360 Event Group.

Ms Uthup said the late MJ’s song ‘We are the world’ sold 20 million copies worldwide, back in the 1980s. The ‘Mile sur mere tumhara’ song took inspiration from MJ’s song. “He overcame barriers and touched people’s hearts, despite getting embroiled in a slew of controversies. Even after his death, a lot many children and youth are inspired to dress like him and also to ‘moonwalk’ like their hero,” said Ms Uthup, who did the Hindi version of MJ’s ‘Don’t stop till you get enough’. The year is important for her, since she would complete 40 years of singing. Singer Jassie Gift said that Ms Uthup would compose a special song for the occasion.

Popular personalities from the film, television and cultural arenas would participate in the function for which the admission is free. A candle-lighting ceremony and silent prayer too would be held. Solo and group dance events would begin from July 25. Oberon Mall will host the moonwalk contest for members of the public, from July 25.
