Team submits report on the project
Works on silt removal undertaken

CHENNAI: Efforts are on to restore the ecosystem in the Cooum river following the model adopted in the case of San Antonio in Texas, U.S.

Disclosing this in the Assembly, Durai Murugan, Public Works Minister, said the State government had deputed a team of officials to the U.S. to study how San Antonio was revitalised.

The team, comprising K.Phanindra Reddy, an IAS officer, submitted its report.

“The government is paying special attention to renovate the Cooum with financial assistance of the World Bank,” the Minister said, replying to a query of E.S. S. Raman (Congress) on the status of the Cooum improvement scheme under the Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Bodies Restoration and Management project. To questions of P.K. Sekar Babu (AIADMK) and K. Mahendran (CPI-Marxist) on removal of silt from water courses in northern parts of the city before rainy season, he referred to the Rs.1,447-crore project of improving the drainage network under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

Annually, works to the tune of Rs. 5 crore–Rs. 10 crore were taken up to remove silt from the water courses.
