Southern Command wins

HYDERABAD: Southern Command defeated Central Command 25-16, 25-20, 25-17 in the final of the Army Inter-Command volleyball championship at 1 EME Centre (Secunderabad). Lt Gen I. J. Singh, Commandant, MCEME, gave away the prizes.

Match abandoned

The A-Division hockey league match between State Bank of India and Artillery Centre scheduled at Gymkhana Grounds here was abandoned due to wet ground conditions.

Inter-school athletics

Mission Sports of Hyderabad 10 K Foundation will organise an inter-school athletic meet at Gachibowli Stadium on August 1 with a total prize money of Rs. 1.5 lakhs, according to D. Suresh Babu, chief coordinator of the Foundation.

There will be no entry fee.

Competitions will be held for boys and girls in the age groups of under-14 and 16 years and there will be in all five trophies for the different categories winners. No school can send more than three entries which close by July 20.

Chess tournament

The 38th Brilliant Trophy State Open chess tournament will be held on July 11 and 12 in Dilsukhnagar with a total prize money of Rs. 10,000.

Special prizes will be given to the age group boys and girls in the junior category.

Two athletes for England

K. Mridula and K. Sowjanya, both from Andhra Pradesh, have been selected by the Athletic Federation of India to advanced training camp in New Ham Sports Academy in England for six weeks.

Abdul Majid Qureshi (100m) has already left for the above camp.

Inter-district athletics

AP junior inter-district athletics meet for boys and girls in different age groups from 14 to 20 years will be held at Gachibowli from July 10 to 12 to pick the State teams for the South Zone meet to be held in Cochin next month.
