Supreme Court allows UP to shift prisoners
J. Venkatesan
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has permitted the Uttar Pradesh Government to shift the prisoners lodged in Lucknow’s model jail to the new modern jail premises constructed at a cost of about Rs.210 crore.
A three-Judge Bench of Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan, Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice J. M. Panchal passed this order on an appeal against an order of the Allahabad High Court restraining the State from shifting the inmates to the new jail. The Bench vacated the interim stay and permitted the government to develop the old jail area into an ecological park.
Appearing for the State, senior counsel K. K. Venugopal and S. C. Mishra said the High Court had stayed the shifting on mere suspicion that some monuments would be put up in that area. They said the land would be used for development of an eco-park and assured the Court that no monument would be put up on the land.
Mr. Venugopal said the new jail had been constructed with modern amenities with a capacity for accommodating 4,660 inmates and video conferencing facility and everything was ready. The CJI jocularly said,
“Then everyone will prefer to go to jail.”
