BANGALORE: Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Ajai Kumar Singh has instructed all police stations to display telephone numbers of police officers and take other steps for quickly and effectively handling complaints. The instructions come a day after the Kamakshipalya police refused to register a complaint against Housing Minister V. Somanna who has been accused of assaulting the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Assistant Engineer A.N. Somaraju. Mr. Singh said the police have been accused of making complainants wait for a long time and also not attending to complaints quickly and properly. Therefore, there was a need for steps to bring in transparency in working of the police stations. All the police stations have now been asked to display by the roadside a board stating the telephone numbers of the in-charge police sub-inspector, circle inspector, Deputy Superintendent of Police and the toll-free number. Offices of the Superintendent of Police and the Commissioner of Police should have boards with telephone numbers of police officers who could be contacted if a complaint is not registered. Mr. Singh also announced an award of Rs. 10,000 for the Superintendent of Police or the Police Commissioner who takes “innovative and effective” methods for quick and proper handling of complaints. The reward will be given during the annual conference of Senior Police Officers of Karnataka in January 2010, he said.
