Legislature pays tribute to leaders

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Both the Houses of the State legislature paid tribute to nine leaders, including former Minister Harnahalli Ramaswamy, B.T. Channabasappa, MLC, and former Kannada Development Authority chairman B.M. Idinabba, who passed away recently.

Tribute was also paid to former MLCs C.J. Devanath and M. P. Eshwarappa and former MLAs V. Vasudev, G. Shankare Gowda B. P. Gangadhar and M. B. Divatar.

Speaker Jagadish Shettar and Council Chairman Veeranna Mathikatti moved the obituary references in the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council respectively.

A minute’s silence too was observed as a mark of respect to the departed leaders.

In the Assembly, the services of the departed leaders to society was hailed by Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah and the Janata Dal (S) Legislature Party leader H. D. Revanna.

In the Legislative Council, the Janata Dal (Secular) Floor Leader M. C. Nanaiah and Home Minister V. S. Acharya described Mr. Ramaswamy as a leader who stood for values.

Pointing out that a majority of the recommendations made by the Karnataka Administrative Reforms Commission (KARC) headed by Mr. Ramaswamy were yet to be implemented by the Government, Mr. Nanaiah said the best way to pay tribute to Mr. Ramaswamy was to implement the recommendations of the KARC completely. “The Government should at least ask its Ministers to read the ARC recommendations, let alone implement them,” Mr. Nanaiah remarked.

Leader of the Opposition in the Council V. S. Ugrappa said politics was not a profession for Mr. Ramaswamy who tried to bring about social change through various roles such as writer, lawyer and Minister.

The Council was adjourned for the day after paying tribute to these leaders.
