Increase minimum wage for farm labourers: Association
Staff Reporter
KRISHNAGIRI: The minimum wage for farm labourers should be raised to Rs. 150, the Tamil Nadu Farm Labourers’ Association has demanded.
A resolution to this effect was passed at its State general body meeting held in Denkanikottai recently, said R. Mutharasan, State General Secretary of the association.
He told journalists that the minimum wages for farm labourers was fixed four years ago by the government. As the cost of living had increased since then, it should be calculated as per present cost of living, he added.
Under the NREGS in many villages labourers were being paid Rs. 40 to Rs. 50 as against Rs. 80 fixed by the government.
The Central government should strive to provide 100 days of work to all the eligible members of a family as against 100 days per family.
The State and Central governments should take immediate action to release water for the crops of Cauvery delta farmers.
Group houses in the State were badly damaged in many places, recently two people had died in Sivagangai when a house collapsed. Government should come forward to build group houses at Rs. 2.50 lakh for the poor.
It should also take effective steps to uplift the Dalits in the State.
The association had decided to stage demonstrations across the State on July 28 to press these demands, he added. Ramachandran, M.L.A. representing Thali, CPI State Committee Member Ilagumaiya and others participated.
