No takers: TNEB quarters, near Mallipatti, on Singarapettai -Nadupatti road in Krishnagiri district remain uninhabited for years.

KRISHNAGIRI: When the State-owned Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is in the grip of a financial crunch, staff quarters at Mallipatti on the Singarapettai-Ettipatti main road have been lying unused for many years.

Area

There are 15 RRC buildings with the plinth area of 11,586 square feet that did not attract the staff, despite being provided with all the fittings, service roads, street lights, power connection.

TNEB sources in Tirupatthur told The Hindu that these buildings were constructed on a 8.82 acre plot adjacent to its sub-station in 1984 at Rs. 3.79 lakh (present market value is estimated to be several lakhs).

As the quarters are situated in a remote place, TNEB staff are not willing to relocate their families. The purpose of constructing the quarters was the availability of the staff on an SOS call.

After the construction was completed, some TNEB employees stayed in the quarters for a few years.

Since the last four years the quarters have been lying vacant, locals said.

Lack of proper medical and public transport facilities, education for children, potable drinking water and not adequate safety are the reasons cited by the staff for not occupying the quarters.

Damaged

Official sources said that this is only the tip of an iceberg. In many places in the State, staff quarters built by the board were lying vacant. Some of the buildings were badly damaged.

In some places though, buildings are in good condition to live and the staff are willing move in.

Local people in Mallipatti said the buildings were being used by the anti-social elements during night.

They add that either the board should use the building or it should allow poor people to live there.
