Ponmudy gave away honorarium to the tune of Rs. 16.5 lakh to fishermen families at Kottakuppam near here on Wednesday. He said that the Fisheries Department had declared fishing holiday from April 15 to May 29. As this was the breeding season for fish, such a restriction was being imposed every year. To compensate the fishermen for the period, an honorarium of Rs. 500 was given to each family. A total of 3,300 families in 19 fishing hamlets in Kottakuppam town panchayat were benefited. Permanent houses were also being built for the tsunami-hit, Mr. Ponmudy said. Chief Minister M. Karuananidhi had formed 28 welfare boards, including one for fishermen, to improve the marginalised sections of society. Mr. Ponmudy said that Kottakuppam Government High School had been upgraded to a higher secondary school. In the last four years, 128 new schools were started in the district, including 10 primary schools, 55 middle schools, 29 high schools and 34 higher secondary schools. By filling vacancies to posts of teachers and improving facilities in the schools, the district had achieved impressive results in Standard X and Plus-Two examinations. In the sphere of higher education too, vacancies were being filled, Mr. Ponmudy said. In terms of infrastructure and performance, government schools and colleges were on a par or even one step ahead of private educational institutions. Mr. Ponmudy gave away over 2,800 free colour television sets to residents of Karasanur, T. Parangini and Kunnam. He said that of 1,104 panchayats in the district, 716 were so far covered under the scheme. It would be extended to 61 more panchayats by the month-end. Collector incharge C.
