GULBARGA: Members of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) have demanded that the State Government withdraw the decision to increase fares in buses operated by State transport corporations.

The members, including many women, staged a demonstration in front of the city central bus-stand for more than an hour shouting slogans against the BJP Government. They said that increasing the bus fares was unjustifiable. They said that the increase in the fares would have an adverse impact on the prices of essential commodities transported in these buses and also on the revenue of the transport corporations as commuters may prefer to travel in private buses.

Dharna

Bijapur Staff Correspondent reports:

Members of the district organising committee of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Bijapur on Thursday to protest against the increase in bus fares.

The protesters took out a procession from Gandhi Chowk through the main streets of the city and raised slogans against the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) authorities. Addressing the members, district unit organising convener Bhagwan Reddy said that the increase in fares would adversely affect poor and middle-class people across the State.

“Instead of increasing bus fares, the KSRTC authorities should take steps to curb expenditure,” he said.

The protesters submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner R. Shantraju in this regard. They warned that the SUCI would intensify its agitation if the authorities concerned did not withdraw the hike in bus fares.
