Budget will affect farmers: KPRS

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The Karnataka Pranta Raitha Sangha (KPRS) said here on Thursday that Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had camouflaged the ill-effects of proposals in the Union Budget on small and marginal farmers and projected the proposals as growth-oriented.

Maruti Manpade, president of the KPRS and State secretariat member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said that the Finance Minister, while claiming that the budget proposals would result in achieving an agricultural growth of four per cent, had failed to make any attempt to increase agricultural income.

Similarly, by opening the agricultural market to foreign players and multinational companies, the Finance Minister had hoped to achieve the desired growth in the agricultural sector. “But this will result only in the growth of agriculture-based companies and not actual farmers,” he said.

The budget had not addressed either the major crisis faced by the farming sector or farmer suicides, he said. The Vidarbha package had neither ameliorated the problems of the farming community nor had the farm loan waiver helped in controlling farm suicides. .

The Finance Minister should have announced loan waivers for farmers who had borrowed money from moneylenders, Mr. Manpade added.
