NTADCL plans water supply to Coimbatore industries

M. Soundariya Preetha

COIMBATORE: The New Tirupur Area Development Corporation (NTADCL), which supplies water to dyeing units and households in Tirupur and adjoining areas through the Tirupur Water Supply and Sanitation Project, plans to extend water supply to Coimbatore industries.

The Rs. 1,023-crore public-private partnership project took off in February 2006 with a plan to supply about 100 million litres a day (mld) to the industries and 48 mld for domestic consumers in Tirupur.

NTADCL Chief Operating Officer S. Shankar told The Hindu that the Corporation was able to meet the stipulated domestic supply. The industry off-take in Tirupur now was 48 to 50 mld.

With the scope to provide about 25 mld to industries here, NTADCL had conducted a study of the proposed supply routes and organised a meeting recently with potential consumers here. It had suggested two routes to bring water to the industries here. The company suggested that the industry collectively invest the capital needed to lay the pipeline and to build pumping houses and other facilities. NTADCL would commission the project and supply water in association with the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. It would reimburse the amount invested in a phased manner by offering discount in water charges.

Mr. Shankar said the investment would be Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 1.5 crore for one mld, though it would vary with topography. The water charges would work out to Rs. 60 per 1,000 litres a day.

Any sector, including textile mills, educational institutions, townships and foundries could participate, he said. Talks were on with potential consumers.
