RapidShare to focus on Indian market

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Switzerland-based file-hosting company RapidShare on Wednesday said it planned to expand its business in India to tap the booming Internet market.

“We are targeting a user base of 36 lakh persons after the launch of more services this year, up from around 20-lakh users now. We expect to see a 10-20 per cent increase in activity this year as we launch more services,” said RapidShare COO Bobby Chang. Addressing journalists here, Mr. Chang said: “The focus is on increasing premium users who can share files with their peers in a secure environment. We are targeting corporate and end-users to push our premium services. We are working on the strategy for this.” RapidShare, which has around five crore users globally, offers free and premium paid services for online file sharing.

Stating that they plan to offer services like RapidGames and RapidMovies, Mr. Chang said: “India has a great potential for Internet usage. The Internet penetration in India is increasing every year and there is scope for growth of communication and hosting data online.”
