An institution minus powers: Lokayukta

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde on Wednesday criticised the State Government for not taking effecting steps in tackling corruption and maladministration.

“Creating an institution of Lokayukta and not giving it powers does not serve any purpose,” he said.

Taking a serious view of the Government’s response to maladministration and corruption, Mr. Hegde said: “The Government is allowing officials to take the Lokayukta to court. Can this be allowed?” The State Government was not taking action that was necessary, he added.

He efforts were being put to dilute the Prevention of Corruption Act. Amendments had been brought to the Act to shift the burden of proving accruing of more assets from the accused official to the prosecuting agency. The Lokayukta police now have to take sanction to file charge-sheet even against retired officials.
