Bangalore: The Karnataka Government is committed to ensuring that not a single girl child is deprived of educational opportunities, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said here on Wednesday.

Speaking at the belated celebration of International Women’s Day in which Kittur Rani Chennamma awards were given away to achievers, he reeled out various programmes announced in the four previous budgets for women’s welfare, from Bhagyalakshmi Scheme to Devadasi rehabilitation programmes.

Women achievers

Indian women were achieving great strides the world over, said Mr. Yeddyurappa, pointing out that they were part of even U.S. President Barack Obama’s team of advisers. Various individual women achievers and organisations working for women’s welfare were felicitated on the occasion. Parvathamma Rajkumar was among the recipients of Chennamma Award.

Confusion

Confusion prevailed at the function as it combined distribution and prizes, awards and title deeds to women, children and physically-challenged people.

While children and women were hurried to and off the stage, the worst-affected were the physically-challenged people who were beneficiary of schemes and were invited to receive certificates. With no ramp available and no temporary arrangements made, some of them had to be carried by to the stage with great difficulty by their relatives.
