Truck terminals abutting national highways proposed

T. Lalith Singh

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) as part of the Master Plan of Hyderabad Metropolitan Area implementation has proposed development of truck terminals/logistic hubs abutting the national highways.

According to the authority estimates, over 30,000 freight vehicles ply on the city roads daily with 1 lakh tonne cargo bound to and fro generating the demand for warehousing of 10 lakh sft and parking demand for 10,000 cargo vehicles. Hence, the hubs are proposed on self-sustainable model as BOT structures with provision for commercial activities to generate resources.

For the purpose, the HMDA has identified government lands on eight corridors around the city with an area ranging from 20 to 40 acres and land at five locations at Peddashapur, Batasingaram, Muraharipally, Mangalpally and Edulabad has already been taken over.

The IL&FS Infrastructure Development Corporation has been roped in as advisor for structuring the project in PPP mode. Inception report by the project advisors include recommendations for one Integrated Logistic Hub apart form moderate hubs and truck terminals, with a minimum area of 85 to 100 acres adjoining the national highway having connectivity with Outer Ring Road to house Inland Container Depot with Rail siding and around 25 acres to 40 acres on National and State Highways beyond the ORR for facilities such as parking, warehousing and wayside amenities.

The locations identified for the integrated facility happens to be the stretch adjacent to the railway line and NH7 along Medchal-Dabeelpura-Manhorabad, along Timmapur railway station towards Bangalore and Adulabad with connectivity to Ghatkesar railway station, ORR and NH 202.

A logistic hub is typically envisaged to fulfil an aim of providing parking facility for commercial heavy vehicles, reduce their turn around time, eliminate parking and loading instances within the city and cater logistic requirements of the industries with establishment of warehousing offices of transporters, clearing and forwarding agents. Hubs are meant to solve staggering traffic congestion caused by freight vehicles through circumventing inner roads of city, providing various facilities for smooth passage of logistic transport.

Also included will be facilities for the crew and vehicle maintenance.
