Interesting: Playwright Girish Karnad at the Indian Cartoon Gallery in Bangalore on Wednesday. BANGALORE: “The health of a political system is measured by the kind of cartoons it produces,” said playwright and Jnanpith Award winner Girish Karnad at the inauguration of the silver jubilee celebrations of the Indian Institute of Cartoonists here on Wednesday. ExhibitAs part of the celebrations, the IIC has organised an exhibit of the entries for the Maya Kamath Memorial Awards for Excellence that was held a month ago, at the Indian Cartoon Gallery. The exhibit featured around 70 political cartoons in English and regional languages by 41 cartoonists from across the country. The cartoons commented on various issues ranging from dynastic politics and terrorism to communalism and the recession. EncouragementV.G. Narendra, managing trustee of the institute, said the idea behind the competition was to encourage and provide an incentive to cartoonists in the country. Nandan Kamath, representing Maya Kamath’s family, and Mr. Karnad spoke about the importance of cartoons and of an organisation that focuses exclusively on developing and encouraging the art. Mr. Karnad gifted the institute a copy of cartoonist Kutty’s biography. The first three award-winning cartoons by Sandeep Adhwarya of Outlook, Ramdhyani of Navika daily and Shankar Pamarthy of Sakshi newspaper, respectively were on display. Special prizeA special prize was given to Mohammad Zahoor from Pakistan who submitted a cartoon of a Barack Obama speech. Mujeeb Patwa, an aerospace engineer with HAL, won the best Budding Cartoonist Award. The exhibit is on till July 18 from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. at no.1, Midford House, Midford Garden, off M.G.Road.
