SAFETY AT STAKE: Without a median, safety on Avanashi Road is compromised as motorists turn at any point on this busy stretch.
Coimbatore: Work on a long-awaited central median to ensure orderly traffic and pedestrian movement all along the busy Avanashi Road is expected to start this month.
The 16-km stretch of Avanashi Road was taken up for six-laning at an outlay of Rs. 27 crore in August 2007. With the road widening over, the authorities are busy widening the bridges.
Work on almost all minor and major bridges is on; it is expected to be completed in the next 60 days.
The highways authorities had planned to finish the work in September 2009 and had called for expressions of interest from corporates to be sponsors for the median. A court ruling against advertisements and hoardings stalled the efforts to get sponsors. The highways authorities, through the district administration, mooted a proposal for the work without any sponsors. The proposal was accepted and Rs. 3 crore was sanctioned.
The Government Order came and tenders were floated. After the tendering process, the work is expected to begin this month. Of the 16-km-long stretch, the authorities felt the median would be required along a 10-km stretch. Some stretches already have the median.
