YSR vents ire on birthday greeting ads

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s plan to celebrate his 60th birthday in a quiet manner did not materialise as overenthusiastic Congress workers flooded the luxury hotel where he was staying with his family in south Goa with cakes and bouquets.

Dr. Reddy and family who left for Goa to keep away from the glare of media and party leaders, spent the day quietly in prayer. He did not venture out of the hotel room till Wednesday evening.

Close to a 100 bouquets and 20 cakes were delivered at Hotel Leela Kempinski, according to sources.

The Chief Minister was in for another shock when he lay his eyes on a full page of classified advertisements carrying birthday greetings in an English daily published from Goa. Irked by the advertisement, he is said to have instructed his office staff in Hyderabad to immediately courier all the newspapers published in the city on Wednesday carrying the advertisements. His instructions were immediately complied with.

‘Upset’

Upset over the large number of birthday greeting ads, he is said to have picked up the phone and given an earful to the staff in his office. Soon after, a press release from the Chief Minister’s office followed. It stated that Dr. Reddy was “anguished and annoyed” by such wasteful expenditure by the Congress leaders and other business houses that issued advertisements.

Dr. Reddy noted that he had always preferred a low profile birthday. He would been happy if the party leaders had spent the money for the poor and weaker sections.
