‘Stop construction of projects upstream’
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: The Praja Rajyam has demanded that the government take steps to stop construction of projects upstream of Krishna and Godavari rivers by neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka States. Praja Rajyam leader T. Devender Goud, at a press conference, expressed concern over reports of construction of a series of barrages across Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers by Karnataka government. While Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah had ridiculed the Opposition parties for their concern on Babli project, the Maharashtra government was going ahead with erection of gates that would adversely affect the ayacut under Sriramsagar project.
Though the Congress was in power at the Centre, Maharashtra and the State, no effort had been made to stop the moves by the neighbouring State.
Construction of barrages across Krishna would similarly lead to drying up of lakhs of acres ayacut under the Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar projects.
