BANGALORE: The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) increased the fares with effect from Tuesday midnight citing financial burden due to the increase in diesel price by Rs. 2.19 from July 2. BMTC Managing Director Syed Zameer Pasha in a release said the hike was restricted to just Re. 1 in most of the stages. Only a few stages will have an increase of fare by Rs. 2. Fares for the first three stages, however, will remain unchanged in ordinary services, Mr. Pasha said. BMTC also revised the monthly pass structure and brought the number of categories from three to two. Earlier, there were three categories of passes — City (black board), mofussil (red board) and Pushpak/ Suvarna. However, it brought the mofussil and Pushpak/ Suvarna passes on a par by increasing the mofussil pass rate from Rs. 565 to Rs. 600 and not touching the Pushpak/ Suvarna pass rates. BMTC also increased the pass rates of City from Rs. 420 to Rs. 450. This facilitates pass holders to travel in non-air conditioned service within the city limits. Senior citizens will get the City passes at Rs. 400 and Pushpak/ Suvarna pass at Rs. 540. The corporation which had not touched the day pass rates for long, chose to increase the rate by Rs. 2. The daily pass will cost Rs. 32 with effect from July 15. The new rates for monthly passes will be applicable from August 1.
