Corrections and clarifications

  • The sixth paragraph of “Such a short journey” (Editorial page, July 7, 2009) was “Public anger against the military peaked with the imposition of the second Emergency in November 2007, and by the time Gen. Musharraf gave up his uniform on November 15, 2007 …”. The date should have been November 28, 2007.

  • The Kanchrapara-Halisahar railway complex was misspelt as Kancharapara-Halisahar railway complex in “Focus on passenger amenities” (Editorial, July 4, 2009).

  • In a report “Mamata spares passengers” (July 4, 2009, page 1) the first paragraph said that it is for the first time in six years that passenger and freight charges have been left untouched.

The passenger fares had been revised downwards during the past five years and this time it had not been revised either way, hence untouched for the first time.

The eighth paragraph said that under the Tatkal scheme, the fare would be charged for the destination instead of the entire route of the train as of now. The fare would be charged from the boarding station to the point of destination and not for the entire route of the train as at present.

  • The heading of a report “Industrial production expected to do better in May” (“Business” page, July 1, 2009) led to a query on whether it was a reference to May 2010. Industrial production data, like export sector data, is released almost a month and 15 days later for the previous month. So data for May is released in mid-July, while for June, the data is available only in mid-August. In this case, the statistics for May was published in The Hindu on July 2, but the news item preceded it on July 1.

The heading could have avoided making a reference to May.

  • The fourth paragraph of a report “Two elephant poachers held in Dharmapuri district” (Tamil Nadu, July 5, 2009) had a reference to ‘Single Ball Muscle Loader’ ammunition. It is “muzzle”. (On March 11, 2008, a similar correction was: “Muscle loader gun” should have been “muzzle-loader gun”. “Corrections and Clarifications”, February 12, 2008, had a related correction pointing out that “single-barrel bridge loading rifle”, in a report “Armed gang walks away with firearms and weapons from police station” (Tamil Nadu, February 10, 2008), should have been “single barrel breech loading gun (SBBL).)

  • A report “[Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL)] Desalination plant commissioned” (Chennai city, July 5 2009, page 4) said “It is the first of its kind in the country. There are no other refineries with an allied desalination plant.” A reader points out that the Reliance Industries Limited oil refinery near Jamnagar and Essar Oil’s refinery, also near Jamnagar, Saurashtra region of Gujarat, have desalination plants. The Chennai Bureau clarifies that the CPCL unit is the first reverse osmosis-based plant and the first in the public sector unit. The two refineries the reader names use multi-flash thermal technology.

  • The headline of a report “High Court comes to the rescue of old woman in maintenance case” (Some Tamil Nadu editions, July 6, 2009, page 4) should have said “Lok Adalat comes to the rescue ...” The case was referred to the District Legal Services Authority by a lower court and not the High Court. The first paragraph also said “The couple begot three sons and a daughter out of their wedlock”. The phrase is “born in (or out of) wedlock, which means “born of married (or unmarried) parents. In the report, it should have been “born in wedlock”.
