13 killed in blast in cracker unit

Some of them critically injured Building completely damaged in explosion
MADURAI: At least 13 people were killed and several others injured in an accident at a fireworks manufacturing unit at Vadakkanpatti near Chekkanoorani in Madurai district on Tuesday.
The explosion took place at V. B. M. Fireworks and the fire spread to two nearby godowns.
80 persons working in the unit
According to the locals, about 80 persons were working in the unit when the accident took place. The explosion was trigged while bundles of finished goods were stacked by workers. The impact of the blast was so huge that one of the buildings used as a godown was completely damaged. Nearby trees were ripped off the ground. Fire and Rescue Service personnel and police recovered eight charred bodies from the debris.
The injured were admitted to Government Rajaji hospital here. The condition of some was said to be critical.
A firefighting unit from Usilampatti put out the flames at around 9.30 p.m.
It took some time for Fire and Rescue Service personnel to enter the premises to recover the injured persons.
