MADURAI: All polling stations are considered sensitive during a by-election, according to Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta. ArrangementsSpeaking to reporters here on Monday after presiding over a meeting that discussed preparatory arrangements for by-elections, Mr. Gupta said the Election Commission had to conduct by-polls within six months in Cumbum (Theni district) and Illayankudi (Sivaganga district) constituencies following the resignation of MLAs. “I discussed the arrangements and requirements with the District Election Officers.” Apart from deploying Central forces and micro-observers, video cameras would be in place for the by-polls. As for the voters list, Mr. Gupta said it would be based on the pre-delimitation period. All registered political parties would be given a copy of the rolls soon. Asked about the status of applications filed for inclusion in the voters list by about 90,000 applicants in Madurai prior to the Lok Sabha polls, Mr. Gupta said the Commission did not want to accept bogus applications. Genuine applicantAt the same time, it would ensure that no genuine applicant was left out. He said the Commission might include Srivaikuntam constituency also in the by-election schedule.
