BANGALORE: BJP general secretary H.N. Ananth Kumar described the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee as a “wasted opportunity” for initiating steps for revitalisation of the country’s economy affected by global recession. In a release, Mr. Ananth Kumar said the hopes of people that the Finance Minister would provide a solution through his budget to the economic recession being faced by the country had been belied. The budget was an opportunity for Mr. Mukherjee to tackle serious problems such as fall in agricultural production, price rise, unemployment, and slowdown in garment, steel, construction and automobiles sectors. But the Finance Minister had wasted the opportunity by running away from problems, he alleged. Pointing out that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced that steps would be taken to get back black money from foreign banks within 100 days, Mr. Ananth Kumar said it was a matter of shock that the President’s speech as well as the Union Budget did not have any mention in this regard.
