MANGALORE: A fresh leptospirosis case has been reported in Mangalore taluk, taking the number of persons infected by this fever in the taluk to two, taluk health officer Ratnakar said on Monday.

Stating this at a meeting to review the progress of development activities in the taluk during the first quarter of this fiscal Dr. Ratnakar said that the fresh case had been reported from a private hospital here on Monday. The patient infected with this fever was from Kuppepadavu village, he added.

The first leptospirosis case had been reported from Moodbidri a month ago. The patient had recovered from the fever, he said.

The taluk health officer said that a fresh case of dengue had also been reported on Monday from Bajpe village. With this, the number of dengue-infected people in the taluk had gone up to 11. The ten affected persons had recovered from it, he said.

Dr. Ratnakar said that the health officials had come across 37 persons suffering from tuberculosis in the taluk in June. With this the number of persons suffering from this disease in the taluk had gone up to 313 in six months.

As many as 29 malaria-affected cases had been reported in June in the taluk. In all, 73 malaria cases been reported in the taluk in six months.

An official of the Department of Social Welfare said that the Government had done away with the scheme of providing sewing machines to the poor. Abhayachandra Jain, MLA from Moodbidri, who presided over the meeting, however, opposed the withdrawal of the scheme. He urged the official to recommend to the Government to continue the same because it was beneficial to many poor people.

An official of the Integrated Child Development Project said that under the “Bhagyalakshmi” scheme, it was essential that both the parents of the female child were from below poverty line (BPL) family. If the husband was from above poverty line (APL) family, the female child could not avail the scheme, he said. While discussing the projects taken up by Engineering Department Mr. Jain said that he had come to know that the Government had diverted some development funds meant for Dakshina Kannada to other districts. He asked assistant executive engineer of Panchayatraj Engineering sub-division I to furnish details of projects which had been stalled for lack of funds. The MLA said that he would take up the matter with the Government.

Ramachandra Kumpala, president of Mangalore Taluk Panchayat, was present.
