The team found out that even some basic amenities were not there The public distribution system was weak and it had collapsed totally Lalgarh: West Bengal Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty said on Monday that the government was working on a package for the tribals in strife-torn Lalgarh in Paschim Medinipur. Talking to journalists at the State secretariat, he said that the task force which he heads, and which was set up last year to look into the problems of the area, would formulate this package. He declined to give further details. Mr. Chakraborty said the team of eight bureaucrats, including some department secretaries, who visited the tribal area in phases during the ongoing ‘joint forces’ drive to flush out the Maoists, had found that many areas needed attention here . They had submitted their report to him on their return and the inputs would be used while formulating the package. “Even some basic amenities were not there.” The public distribution system was weak and it had collapsed totally, aggravating the plight of the poor people, who had many complaints against the system. There were no health centres. There was even shortage of potable water in the area, Mr. Chakraborty said. It is in this context that the government is thinking of working out a special package for the people of this area, many of whom are now bereft of any economic activity. He said that the bureaucrats, which included some departmental secretaries had submitted their report to him on their return and this will be used as inputs for formulating the package. The people of Lalgarh and its adjacent areas, many of whom are bereft of economic activity, are now trying to return to normal lives after the forces sanitised most of the Maoist-dominated areas and recaptured government offices taken over by the ultras.
