Demolition of Sahara township stayed

Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court on Monday stayed the demolition being carried out by the Uttar Pradesh Government at a township developed by the Sahara group in Gorakhpur.

The order was passed by a Division Bench comprising Justice Sunil Ambawani and Justice Ran Vijai Singh on a writ petition filed by Sahara India Commercial Corporation Ltd.

The petition filed by the industrial group, known for its proximity to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, alleged the demolition had been ordered by the BSP Government in the State ‘illegally’ and ‘because of political reasons’.

The petition also challenged the State Government’s contention that the township was developed by encroaching on government land and alleged the authorities concerned had not carried out the mandatory measurement of the land before carrying out the demolition process.

The petition demanded an inquiry by an independent agency into charges of encroachment of government land.

The court, while directing the district administration and the revenue authorities of Gorakhpur to get the measurements of the land done in accordance with law, fixed July 13 as the next date of hearing in the case. -- PTI
