In Tuticorin Caldwell Colony, the supply of electricity gets disrupted intermittently every two or three hours invariably daily. During day each of such disruptions lasts not less than 45 minutes and during night more than an hour every three hours or so. Such power failures, particularly during night, adversely affect students as they are unable to concentrate fully on their studies. Emerson R Samuel, Tuticorin. Abolition of examThis refers on the Centre’s proposal on the abolition of public examination for Std. X. (On school education reforms... by Centre (The Hindu, July 4). Though school syllabi and examinations are in need of drastic changes, making optional of the SSLC public exams will not be in the best interest of the student community and in the overall improvement of the general educational standards. If the public examinations are abolished and instead a grading system introduced, then the students cannot be expected to learn the subjects in depth and work hard to get more marks. M. Maheswari, Tirunelveli. Haphazard parkingPedestrians and other motorists find it difficult to use the Tiruchendur-Tuticorin National Highways in Tuticorin since heavy vehicles like tippers and lorries are parked on either side of the road haphazardly. As a result, there are scenes of traffic chaos on the arterial road. Further, the large number of vehicles passing through the stretch is only adding to the road woes. In the process, the unauthorised and haphazard parking is a stumbling block to the entire traffic on the road. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Vazhavallan.
