Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Monday welcomed the Union Budget 2009-10 and said that it would give a big impetus to rural development. The budget, he said, also stresses on infrastructure and social sector programmes as well as sectors hard hit by the global slowdown such as exports. President of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) Caesar Menezes described the budget as “growth oriented and rural friendly”. Welcoming the steps like higher allocation for welfare of unorganised sector workers, abolishment of Fringe Benefit Tax and 10 per cent surcharge on personal income tax, the GCCI president and immediate past-president Nitin Kuncoliker appreciated allocation of Rs. 39,000 crore for creating jobs in rural areas and 45 per cent higher allocation for Bharat Nirman projects. While ruing the fact that the Budget failed to give any specific incentives to small and medium enterprises, Atul Nayak, president of Goa State Industries Association, welcomed the step of doing away with tax hassles for the small businesses up to Rs. 40 lakh. Ralph de Souza, president of Travel and Tourism Association of Goa, welcomed the budget.
