Harihar: K. Maridev of the Janata Dal (Secular) was removed from the post of president of Harihar City Municipality on Monday as all the Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress councillors voted against him during the no-confidence motion tabled at a special meeting. Of the 19 Janata Dal (Secular) councillors, 18 voted against him and five Congress councillors also voted against him. Two independent candidates opted to be neutral while the lone BJP councillor was absent. The post of president of the Harihar city municipality had been reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes for the first 30 months. Two candidates from the Janata Dal (Secular) were to be president during the period. Mr. Maridev completed his tenure of 15 months about a month ago and had tendered his resignation to the post. But a few days later, he withdrew his resignation letter after some Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) councillors reportedly told him to continue in the post and expressed their support. Upset by this, other Janata Dal (Secular) councillors moved the no confidence motion against Mr. Maridev. Spokesman of the Janata Dal (Secular) Y.S.V. Datta reportedly issued a whip to party councillors to vote against Maridev and all the councillors had voted against him. Honnamma, another ST councillor is certain to become the next president.
