One killed, three injured in road accident

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: One person was killed and three others were injured in a road accident at Vikkiravandi near here on Monday.

The police said R.Balu (31) of Vikkiravandi, along with his wife Govindammal (27) and daughters Harini (3) and Nandini (seven-month-old infant), were riding a motorcycle from Villupuram to Tindivanam.

When Balu took a right turn to the by-pass road at the Vikkiravandi intersection, a speeding vehicle hit the motorcycle and knocked down all the four. Balu died on the spot and the injured were admitted to Villupuram government hospital.

Irked by the frequent accidents taking place at the spot the residents in the area blocked traffic on the Chennai—Tiruchi highway for about two hours.

After the officials promised suitable action the agitators dispersed. The police are trying to trace the hit-and-run vehicle.

Girl crushed to death

A three-and-half-year-old girl was crushed to death by a school van at Ilavanasurkottai near here on Monday. Nilofer accompanied her mother Jerina Begum to send off her elder sister to school in the van.

After the elder sister boarded the van, Jerina Begum turned to go home. At that time Nilofer playfully moved on to the front side of the van even before her mother noticed her.

The driver, unaware that the little girl was standing near the wheel, moved the vehicle thus killing her on the spot. The police are conducting enquiries.
