Kapil, Priyank in close race

Kolkata: Intense competition between Kapil of Chandigarh and Priyank of Uttar Pradesh to grab the lone spot available in the men’s recurve section for the World Cup archery stage IV, was the highlight on the penultimate day of the three-day trials here at the SAI Eastern Centre on Sunday.

At the end of the FITA round, in which arrows were shot over four distances, Kapil garnered 1309 points.

Priyank was second at 1301 and veteran Acharya Ved Kumar, of ITBP, was third with 1279.

The Archery Association of India has already named Rahul Banerjee, Jayanta Talukdar (both Steel Plant) and Mangal Singh Champia (Railways) in the men’s recurve side for the Shanghai event.

Biruly in good form

Rimil Biruly of Steel Plant carried her form to good effect by logging 1333 points in the single FITA round.

Olympian Dola Banerjee of Railways (1320) was second and was closely followed by the Lakshmi Rani Majhi of Steel Plant (1314). Reena Kumari of Railways was fourth with 1313.

Laishram Bombayala Devi of Railways failed to impress gathering 1284 for the eighth place finish. Another up and coming talent Pratima Boro of Steel Plant was fifth with 1298.

On the final day, the archers will have to shoot 36 arrows four times over 70 metres.

The team would be selected after tallying the two-day cumulative scores. — Principal Correspondent
