Nursing students’ charges: Kerala government writes to YSR

HYDERABAD: The Kerala Government has written to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, seeking a detailed probe into the allegations of sexual harassment levelled by five girl students from that State against Kovvur MLA T. V. Rama Rao.

“We have already sent an e-mail seeking inquiry into the allegations levelled by the nursing students from our State. We hope the Andhra Pradesh Government would respond immediately and take necessary action,” a senior official in the Kerala Health and Social Welfare Minister’s office told The Hindu on Sunday.

The email was sent after Malayalam television channels telecast the complaint lodged by the students with the State Home Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy.

Meanwhile, the students met Governor N.D. Tiwari on Sunday to submit a memorandum to him on the issue. The girls were accompanied by their parents and representative of J.K. Associates, a Kerala-based agency, which helped them get admission in the college. Denying the allegations, Mr. Rao said that he had not committed any wrong and would fight for justice. Talking to reporters after he was discharged from the hospital on Sunday, he alleged that cases were foisted on him. There was no truth in the charges made by the students from Kerala. The MLA claimed receiving threatening phone calls.

In a related development, the Congress Legislature Party accused the Telugu Desam of insulting women by casting aspersions on the girl students and alleging that the Government was behind the ‘drama’. Chief Whip Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Government Whips K. Murali Mohan and S. Shailajanath lamented that the TDP was trying to blame the students and questioning their ‘character’.
