Nation’s oldest lion dead

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: Arjun, the nation’s oldest lion, bred in captivity at Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, died on Sunday due to old age. His condition was fragile for the past several months, zoo curator Rahil Pandey told The Hindu. Born in 1982, he was the pride of Vizag zoo.

The lion had been suffering from digestive disturbances and arthritis for quite some time. The average lifespan of a feline bred in captivity rarely exceeds 18-20 years and in the wild it is between 12 and 16 years. “The animal had well crossed its lifespan and had not been put out for day crawl for the past one year due to its deteriorating health conditions,” Mr. Pandey said.
