Army jawans assault six constables

Refusal to register theft case sparks trouble

Nampally railway police insist that the case be booked at law and order police station

Army men allegedly abuse and shower blows on the policemen

HYDERABAD: Close to 40 Army jawans assaulted six policemen at the Nampally railway police station on Saturday midnight following an argument for not registering a theft case, police said.

Army men allegedly abused and showered blows on the policemen. They later disconnected the landline phone connection and damaged a chair. Of the six policemen, two of them – Syed Sattar and Phool Singh – suffered injuries. The injured were shifted to Osmania General Hospital where they were treated as out-patients.

Trouble began when three army men in uniform accompanied by another person came to the Nampally railway police station around 11.20 p.m. requesting head constable Syed Sattar to register a case as they lost a wallet containing identity and ATM cards along with cash. They informed him that the wallet was missing while they were having dinner in a hotel near the railway station after alighting from AP Express.

Row over jurisdiction

Though Sattar clarified that the place of offence would not come under their limits and suggested lodging a complaint at the Nampally law and order police station, the jawans insisted that the case be booked and a copy of First Information Report (FIR) be given immediately.

The jawans called up their senior officer who in turn reportedly abused Sattar and Singh for not registering a case. After arguing in vain, they left the place only to return with 40 more jawans in three trucks. As soon as they arrived, they encircled the policemen, started arguing and attacked the policemen with sticks.

Based on Sattar’s complaint, police registered cases against three jawans identified as Asik Hussain, Basharat Hussain, Mohender Kumar and others.

“We are trying to trace the army personnel involved in the incident,” said Nampally Sub-Inspector T.Ch. Babu on Sunday.
